Waste heat recovery: making optimum use of resources
Waste heat is the thermal energy generated by a technical device or system that is released unused into the environment. In times of rising energy prices and increasingly scarce resources, the use or utilization and intelligent energy management represent a significant competitive advantage. Waste heat recovery is important in practically all industrial and commercial sectors, and is an obvious choice in industries whose processes require a lot of heat.
Examples of energy-intensive industries
- Metal processing industry
- Food industry
- Paper and pulp industry
- Wood and wood-based materials industry
- Drying plants
- Energy generation systems such as biomass furnaces
Typical examples of waste heat utilisation
Depending on the temperature level, there are numerous types of use. At higher temperature levels, such as in industrial processes or from waste gases from combustion plants (e.g. biomass heating plants), process heat can be generated in the form of process steam or process heat. In some cases, this requires the use of heat pumps, and here too we offer our expertise for the best possible integration. We also work with you to generate electricity from waste heat using the ORC process.
Challenges:
The challenge in creating waste heat utilization concepts lies on the one hand in identifying the waste heat potential in terms of output, temperature level and time availability, and on the other hand in finding suitable energy sinks that require this useful heat. The focus is therefore often on decoupling heat generation and utilization in the form of heat storage systems. We minimize the buffer volume required for heat storage through cross-system control concepts, for example by starting production processes in a controlled manner in order to release or absorb heat. The fixed framework condition is always the process-related control variable (e.g. throughput, quality).
With our concepts and solutions for waste heat recovery, you benefit from our many years of experience and expertise as well as optimal utilization of your potential. You also make a contribution to climate protection.
Our service for the implementation of waste heat recovery systems
- Identification of potential and proposed solutions
- Planning, engineering and technical consulting during the construction or conversion of your waste heat recovery systems
- We define the installation positions of sensors and actuators, specify the sensor and actuator technology, provide support in drafting contracts with suppliers and in agreeing on warranty values.
- We also retrofit waste heat recovery systems as a complete service (similar to general contractors) – simple and clear for you with a comprehensible return on investment
